Tottenham Close in on Deal for Wolves Wing-Back Matt Doherty

Tottenham are at an advanced stage in discussions to sign Matt Doherty from Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Doherty emerged as a surprise target for Jose Mourinho earlier in the transfer window, and is an experienced Premier League player who has played a big part in Wolves' rise over recent years. Since making his debut in 2010, the Irish right-back has made over 300 appearances for the club.

As per the Independent, however, it appears his time with the club could come to an end, as Spurs seek to address a troublesome area within the squad. Wolves are holding out for near £20m for the 28-year-old, but it is reported that Tottenham will consider putting in a lower outright bid that is made up with a series of add-ons.

Spurs fans will be familiar with Doherty from last season, as the defender grabbed Wolves' opening goal of his side's 3-2 Premier League win back in January.

Current right back option Serge Aurier has come under stinging criticism throughout his time in north London, with Mourinho's patience in the Ivorian seemingly running out. While a right wing-back by trade, Doherty has previously filled in on the opposite flank too, his versatility being key in Mourinho's decision to approach Wolves.

The timing of the deal comes as Wolves have seen a bid rejected for Arsenal's Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who would logically fit in as Doherty's replacement. The Telegraph also report that Wolves are interested in Valencia full-back Thierry Correia, who also plays in the position, to add competition for places.

Wolves' opening bid of £15m was knocked back by the Gunners for Maitland-Niles, but they are expected to return with an improved offer in the coming days.

Should Doherty's move south go ahead as expected, then he will become Mourinho's third addition of the window, following the capture of free agent Joe Hart and Southampton's Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
